Introduction
Vehicular radar systems operating in the 24 GHz range can support a variety of applications and functions to increase traffic safety and convenience. These devices provide exact measurement of distance and relative speed of objects in front, beside or behind the car that can significantly improve the driver’s ability to perceive obstacles or dangerous situations.
As such, SRR are a key enabling technology for advanced driver assistance and safety systems .
Figure 1 gives an overview of possible vehicular safety and comfort functions. Notably these functions are for external applications; future non-radar UWB applications within vehicles are anticipated to provide numerous other functions.

Different 24 GHz SRR concepts
In the last years some automotive suppliers have developed proprietary 24 GHz SRR concepts. Today there exist four main categories of 24 GHz SRR operation modes:
Each of these categories has a typical operational parameter set and a characteristic emission pattern. Due to the high frequency of 24 GHz all systems are carrier-based and do not use base-band modulation that is commonly used in the lower frequency ranges.
